When reviewing writing cards, I would like an option to type the character using the native input method on my computer instead of tracing the strokes.
Of course, if you are using Pinyin input, this would defeat the purpose of the writing review. But for shape-based input methods such as Wubi or Cangjie, it would still require you to remember what the character looks like.
I am trying to get used to Wubi, and my laptop doesn’t have a touchscreen. This would be a great way to practice vocabulary and Wubi typing at the same time. I would switch to Skritter on my smartphone when I wanted to practice writing the usual way.
I suspect this would be a very easy feature to add. There only needs to be a text input field with a check if its contents are identical to the written word, and an option to enable it (probably with a warning to only use it if you are using a shape-based input method).
I mainly suggest this feature for the website, but it could also be useful in the smartphone apps. In addition to Wubi, Cangjie, etc., it would then work with the device’s own handwriting input method, which could make the review more efficient by allowing you to link strokes together (ideally, suggestions should then be automatically disabled, but I don’t know if that’s possible).
What do you think?
